Gonzaba Medical Group has acquired real estate in Southeast San Antonio where it plans to construct a multistory medical center.
Confirmation of the roughly $20 million project comes as new economic development activity and population shifts south of the center city are significantly driving up demand for health care.
The San Antonio-based organization plans to build the two-story structure on a site near Goliad Road and Southcross Boulevard, a few minutes north of Brooks. The 40,000-square-foot building will house new medical office, clinical, imaging and event space.
“It’s going to be beautiful,” Gonzaba Medical Group Executive Director of Business Operations Paco Gonzaba said, noting that it will include community space allowing for a more holistic delivery of care. “It's going to have all our services under one roof."
The San Antonio medical group, whose roots date back more than 60 years, has leased space in the area but it has outgrown its current footprint. Gonzaba said the new site can accommodate a second building if demand warrants additional expansion.
The new medical center building is expected to open in 2025. It will be situated in an area near where the organization’s founder, Dr. William Gonzaba, grew up, so there is a special bond with that community.
“One of the things that makes us different is we stay connected to those roots,” Gonzaba said.
The latest development follows another significant investment by the San Antonio-based group in the southern sector of the city. In 2022, Gonzaba Medical unveiled plans for multiple new health and wellness facilities, including a multistory Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center on Pleasanton Road near the group’s main medical center.
That expansion also included the build out of a new urgent care center across from the Physical Medicine tower.
“When you think about the South Side, there has been a lot of discussion about it lacking resources for health care,” Gonzaba, said. “This is where we are continuing to invest and expand our services.”
