The city of Galveston will begin accepting applications for rental assistance, while Montgomery Independent School District and the University of Houston Athletic Department have announced plans to begin the 2020 school year.

City of Galveston to begin accepting applications for rental assistance Monday, Aug. 10

GALVESTON, Texas — The city of Galveston will begin accepting applications Monday for a rental assistance program to help those who have faced financial hardship caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The city will accept applications from Monday, Aug. 10, until Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m.

The city has federal funding available from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for low-to-moderate income individuals and families in the form of three months rental assistance.

For qualifying residents, the program pays up to 100% on expenses related to rent, security deposits and utility bills. Eligibility is based on household income, with the qualifying income limits included below.

District decides to begin in-person instruction earlier than originally planned

Montgomery Independent School District's new school year still begins remotely Aug.13.

But pre-K, kindergarten and some other students will be allowed back on campuses on Aug. 17.

That's more than three weeks ahead of the original plan.

Sixth- and ninth-graders will be able to resume in-person instruction on Aug. 31.

That's followed by all students on Sept. 8.

“Montgomery ISD is plotting its own path,” MISD Board President Jim Dossey said.

UH will limit stadium capacity to 25%, require masks at 2020 Coog football games

HOUSTON — The University of Houston Athletic Department has announced plans for the upcoming football season at TDECU Stadium.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, seating at the stadium will be limited to 25% capacity.

This reduced capacity will give fans room to social distance at games.

"To ensure a safe environment for our season-ticket holders, students and fans we have made the decision to further reduce capacity for the upcoming football season," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said.
